학술논문을 읽다보면, 종종 i.e.와 e.g.를 발견하곤 합니다. 제가 논문을 쓸 때도 이 친구들을 종종 사용하는데, 가끔 헷갈려서 i.g. 이런 식으로 둘을 섞어서 쓰기도 했습니다. 물론 나중에 잘못 쓴 것을 발견하고 고쳤지만요. 오늘은 이 둘이 각각 무슨 뜻을 갖는지 어떻게 사용되는지에 대해 살펴보도록 하겠습니다. 

 

먼저 i.e.는 "즉, 다시 말해서, 바로"의 뜻을 갖습니다. 라틴어 id est를 줄인 것입니다. 영어의 that is 또는 in other words와 같은 뜻을 갖는다고 생각하시면 됩니다.

 

i.e.는 이런 식으로 쓰입니다. 

 

"For limited space, we only show the results of four results of four recent metrics, i.e., CPBD, S3, LPC, MLV, as well as the proposed BIBLE." [1]

 

 

e.g.의 뜻은 "예를 들어, 예를 들면"입니다. 라틴어인 exmpli gratia를 줄인 것인데, 읽을 때는 for example로 읽으면 됩니다. 

 

"Some state-of-the-art full/reduced reference IQA models rely on local spatial contrast features, e.g., the GM and the LOG to predict image quality." [2]

 

 

정리하겠습니다. 앞의 것을 다른 방식으로 좀 더 자세히 설명할 때는 i.e.를 쓰고, 예를 들어 설명할 때는 e.g.를 사용한다고 보시면 됩니다.
